SEO Is Far From Dead in 2024

If you’ve been remotely connected to the world of search engine optimization over the past decade, you’ve undoubtedly seen dozens of articles exclaiming that “SEO is dead”! This message has been even more prevalent in 2023, with search engines actively pushing AI technology, like Bing integrating OpenAI technology, and Google testing solutions like Bard, SGE (search Generative Experience), and the most recent, Gemini.

The fact is that SEO couldn’t be further from dead. Search engine optimization will be increasingly necessary as Google and Bing continue to roll out major algorithm updates and new search features like AI/LLM integration.

I recently sat down with my friend Kristen Rocco, a storyteller and content marketing expert, the President of Bold & Noteworthy Marketing, and the host of the Bold Moves podcast, to discuss how search engine optimization is changing as well as how AI/LLMs and ongoing algorithm updates will play a part in your future SEO strategy.

Some key takeaways from our discussion include:

  1. More frequent algorithm updates will be a way of life for SEOs in 2024. Google will continue to push new functionality and features aligning with their integration of AI in SERPs (such as SGE) and try to reduce spam/low-quality content (helpful content updates, ongoing product review updates, etc.).

  2. AI-generated content will be even more prevalent in search results. While AI-generated content can be an effective tool to help writers or webmasters expand on-site content, this needs heavy oversight and editing to ensure that it provides a quality experience for users.

  3. Technical SEO will continue to be vital to SEO success. You must ensure that search engines can effectively crawl and evaluate your content for indexing. Poor technical SEO can limit search engine comprehension and your performance as AI becomes more prevalent in search result experiences. Technical SEO is an area many websites tend to overlook.
